What to see in Calabria?

This Italy’s region is the one with the southernmost part of the peninsula in an area of 15,080 square kilometers and a population of 1,988,051 inhabitants. Calabria extends to southern Italy, mountainous territory, between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Calabria represents 5 centuries of survival to the collapse of the Roman Empire and Magna Graecia; the tourist attractions are many and range from the environmental and scenic aspects of the coasts, to the archaeological remains of Magna Graecia and artistic of the later centuries. In this case, we cannot fail to mention the famous statues: Riace Bronzes (in Italian, Bronzi di Riace), discovered in 1972, on the stretch of the Ionian Sea, in front of the city of Riace Marina, representing two men completely nude and armed with a shield. They are among the most important masterpieces of Greek sculpture and are a direct testimony of the great sculptors of the classical age of the 5th century BC; today they can be seen in the Archaeological Museum, in Reggio Calabria.

After the Greeks, came the Romans, the Byzantines, Normans, Swabians, Angevins and Aragonese. Exactly for this reason this land is so diverse and in every part of the Calabrian territory we will find a different cultural and artistic heritage!

The beautiful beaches and untouched landscapes around Maratea and Tropea are popular tourist destinations, while the main attractions of the Ionian coast are the Greek ruins of Sybari and Locri, including the hill towns: Gerace and Stilo.

The heritage of this region consists in medieval villages embedded between rocks, often built overlooking to the sea, to protect against Saracen invasions, or in pleasant scenic corners where life still happens according to the rhythms of the seasons.

Others essentials places of artistic and cultural tourism are: the Byzantine Church in Stilo, the Cistercian Abbey of San Giovanni in Fiori and the Baroque Church of Serra San Bruno.

And last but not least, you cannot miss the chance to know the real ‘Calabrese’ culture through its traditions and flavors that in other places are just a memory.
