1) Let’s visit Gambarie in Calabria – MANGERUCA SQUARE
In the storic center, at Piazza Mangeruca, is an interesting fountain, made with a square base made of stone. The glass structure present here creates the illusion that we are observing a mountain, from where, at the top, the water flows, and offers a lot of charm and beauty. When it is cold, the water freezes and gives the fountain a very beautiful view. Around the main square you find shops and hotels.
2) Let’s visit Gambarie in Calabria – THE CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DELLA CANDELORA, PINETA AND THE BELVEDERE
From Piazza Mangeruca, with a short walk, you will find the Church of Santa Maria Della Candelora and, leaving there, you can proceed to Pineta. Pineta is a small pine forest and holds a fountain; the fountain was built in 2003 by architect Gianluca Adami and the artist Corrado Sassi. They were the winners of a contest and made this very beautiful fountain. In winter, this fountain offers us a small spectacle: the water falls down, but it freezes, giving rise to an infinity of small stalactites. From there, head to Belvedere, which offers a beautiful view.
3) Let’s visit Gambarie in Calabria – MOUNT SCIROCCO (SKI STATION)
We leave for the ski station! At Mount Scirocco, the city’s ski resort; using the cable car that is open almost all year round, you reach the top and, from here, on clear days, you can see Etna and the Aeolian Islands. It is one of the few places in the world where you can ski while looking to the sea. The experience is, in fact, very interesting.
The dominant hill is Mount Montalto, with its 1956m high (it is the highest peak in Calabria) and is a historic ski resort: here, in 1956, the first cable car was built in the south. The ski tradition is still alive and has 5 lifts that go up Mount Scirocco and Mount Nardello. A two-seater cable car connects Piazza Mangeruca to the mountains that offer great options for skiing!
The Ski Slopes
The ski slopes go for 10 km, offering unique panoramas. The slopes are suitable for good skiers, but there are three red tracks, one black and one blue, ideal for taking your first steps in the snow. The altitudes vary between 1350 and 1700 meters and it is a lot of fun! There are numerous suitable routes around here and for various winter sports such as skiing and cross-country, which take place in the woods of the Aspromonte National Park.
The hotel complexes that serve the tourists are modern and very well equipped, with every kind of comfort. Some even have a disco! Santo Stefano in Aspromonte is just 23 km from the nearest beach in Gallico and 30 km from the most famous beach on the Costa Viola di Scilla. Above Gambarie and the peak of Mount Scirocco, the entire plateau dominates, with the sea in the background: it is impressive!
The ticket prices are not absurd and you can buy the ski pass from Gambarie: to go up and down, you pay 6 euros; if you want to use the slopes on Saturdays and Sundays, you pay 25 euros; per day, for four hours, the value of the pass is 15 euros, for the whole week, you spend 80 euros.
