About little Catanzaro

This little Calabrian gem called Catanzaro, overlooks the Gulf of Squillace, in the Ionian Sea. The territory extends from the sea to 600 meters in height and includes a coastal area on the Ionian Sea, which houses 8 km of beach and a marina, passing through the inhabited center and going up through the valley until reaching the three hills in which the historic center is located. Due to its particular orography, the municipal territory is bathed by the sea, but subject to phenomena such as snow in the Italian winter. Catanzaro borders the cities of: Borgia, Caraffa di Catanzaro, Gimigliano, Pentone, San Floro, Sellia, Settingiano, Simeri Crichi and Tiriolo, which can also offer alternative accommodation options.

1) Where to stay in Catanzaro? IN HISTORIC CENTER

The city of Catanzaro extents three hills that dominate the Gulf of Squillace. The main artery of the historic center is Corso Giuseppe Mazzini, which starts at Piazza Garibaldi, where Viale Carlo V flows, and leads to Catanzaro Pratica station. Corso Mazzini ends at Piazza Roma, which presents the city’s Cathedral on the left and the modern Politeama Theater on the right. It is an excellent area to stay, and although it costs a little more expensive, it offers great options for restaurants, shops and other establishments, that is, everything is close and accessible. You can do everything with pleasant walking, as the distances are shorts!

The Neighborhoods in the Historic Center

The neighborhoods in the old town are La Grecìa, so named because it received the Greeks who abandoned their coastal settlements shortly after the Saracen attacks; La Maddalena, which is the neighborhood around Via Filanda and is where the silk factories were at the beginning of the city’s expansion; we also have the Case Arse, which is the neighborhood around the church of San Giovanni Battista, on the place of the old Norman castle. In ancient times, this neighborhood was called paradise because of the wonderful views over the Gulf of Squillace. Its current name originates from a fire in 1461 that was ordered by the Marquis de Centelles, who had to face a rebellion by the citizens of Catanzaro;

2) Where to stay in Catanzaro? IN CATANZARO LIDO

Another option is to stay in Catanzaro Lido which is the coastal district of the city. Its boardwalk stretches for about 2 km and offers incredible hotels scattered throughout its coastline. In summer, this is where nightlife happens! Always remembering that the more centralized the hotel, the easier it is to access the tourist spots. After all, if you need it, you can use the public transportation that works really well.

The Transportation

The buses, operated by AMC, efficiently connect the entire city with 30 lines. If you prefer, you can use the subway, which is also a great option for those who are not driving and is easy to use, since it has only one line. If you find it more comfortable, use the Funiculare, which connects the lower part to the upper part of the city. Not to mention that the walks throughout the city are very peaceful, it’s worth it. Service prices vary between EUR 1.50 and EUR 4.50 – everything will depend on the modality you choose.

A little more about Catanzaro…

From the top, the city offers a seductive panorama of the mountains and the Ionian Sea. On the lower side, the sea attracts our attention! The name Catanzaro derives from the Greek: catà anzos, which means “above the ravine” and, in fact, it was the Byzantine Greeks who founded the city more than a thousand years ago, when they regained Calabria by taking it away from the Arabs.

It didn’t take long for the city to grow and become a haven against malaria and Saracen attacks. Conquered in 1055 by the Normans, it still preserved Byzantine customs and traditions; later it became, under the Anjou, a feud of the Ruffo family. In 1466, Afonso I of Aragon, king of Spain, granted political independence to Catanzaro and in 1528, he resisted the siege of the French, thus conquering the title of “magnificent and faithful city” by Carlos V, emperor of Spain.

the city of the three “V’s”

In 1738, the Bourbons succeeded the Spaniards and their dominance was until 1860. Catanzaro contributed to the cause of the Risorgimento and, then, joined the Italian homeland initiating a vast reform in the city which changed it completely. Catanzaro is known as the city of the three “V’s”: the wind (Vento in Italian), Velluti and Vitaliano silk, named after its patron bishop.

The must see spots…

In addition to the beautiful coastline of the city, the Catanzaro Silane plateau, known as Sila Piccola, has renowned winter tourist resorts such as Zagarise and Taverna, with several ski facilities. The ancient Greek colony has a fascinating old town that, until the end of the Bourbon Kingdom, housed 22,000 inhabitants and was marked by six access doors:

  • Porta Marina or Granara, the main door that allowed commerce, near which there were 4 towers of guard, 3 bastions with cannons and, not far from there, the Baluardo dei Palmeti;
  • Porta di San Giovanni or Castellana, in the current Piazza Matteotti, surrounded by a large moat;
  • Porta Pratica, in the current neighborhood of Case Arse;
  • Porta Stratò, “hidden”, located in the neighborhood of the same name, from which the path that rises from the Musofalo valley to the small church nearby is currently visible;
  • Porta del Gallinaio, intended for cattle access and
  • Porta Silana, which also allowed the cattle to reach the Sila plateau.

Full of charm and beauty, the city presents itself in an almost unpretentious way, but it is not difficult to fall in love with it and understand why it played an important role in political, economic and social terms for the history of Calabria.

Conclusion

Choosing a hotel is not easy, especially if we are going to a city we do not know, but it can be simpler if you combine practicality and choose a well located hotel.
