Greek Sila, Great Sila and Small Sila

The beautiful and charming Sila plateau is divided into: Greek Sila, whose territory has hosted many communities in Arbereshe; Great Sila, where the most important tourist destinations are, such as Camigliatello and Lorica and the Small Sila, with the Villages Palumbo, Racise and Mancuso. Starting with Acri, also called the ‘gate of Sila’ because it is located at the foot of the plateau. This village is home to the ruins of a feudal castle, the Sanseverino-Falcone Palace, the Julia Palace, with its large library, and the Spezzano Palace. Nearby, there is also the former Capuchin convent, a 19th century basilica and the imposing Beato Angelo d’Acri. There is also San Giovanni in Fiore, the most populous city in Sila, whose center has many churches, including the Florentine Abbey and the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

In addition to things to see, there is much things to do in the Sila Park, the main activities during the beautiful season and in the fall are excursions, between the forests of Sila, ‘the green lung of Calabria’, perfect for longer trekking. The Typical Sila Dish

It must be emphasized that Sila is also the land of ancient traditions, in fact preserving the flavors of an era, including the food. To try, without a doubt, are the typical dishes of the place, such as ‘mpanata’, soup made with ricotta cheese, whey still hot and pieces of crusty bread. Inevitable will be a walk through the forest rich in conifers, a symbol of the territory, whose main species is represented by pine, present with beech and white fir in the splendid Forest of the Giants. You can leave for Sila from Paola, Lamezia Terme, Catanzaro and Crotone train stations with the Calabria Railway. The central position of the Sila National Park facilitates access by car, both from the Ionian area, along the SS 106, and from Tirrenica, through the SS 18. In both cases, however, the ‘A3’ road artery represents the axis primary to make your choice for long trips, with your departures Cosenza, Rogliano, Altilia Grimaldi and, further south, Lamezia Terme.
